Get on track with the latest software updates:
To everyone who has not yet updated CROSS Library (since January 27th), you may need to install the latest CROSS Library download UPDATES onto any system where CROSS Library is currently installed. This UPDATE connects CROSS Library to our new cloud backup system and enabled automatic updates to keep you up-to-date as we continue to improve the system!
See our download pages for instructions to know how to ‘UPDATE’ your version (Mint vs. 32-bit). NOTE: For Mint, copy the link above, open your ‘CROSS Library Mint’ system, open Firefox, and skip past the ‘A)’ section of the Mint Download page, then look for this download: ‘B) Optional Manual Update’. Download and install that. (The instructions are found on the page.)
After installation, right-click on the little ‘Books’ icon in your system tray. If you see a message to call CROSS Systems, Inc. for support, please do that. (Your system may need the update installed in a different way–we will help you correctly update your system in these cases.)

Scroll down for the list of recent software updates provided for CROSS Library.

CROSS Systems, Inc. is committed to updating CROSS Library on a regular basis.  We have consistently upgraded and enhanced our software since 1994. Unlike many other software companies, you do not have to purchase a new version of the software every few years. Under our CROSS Library Subscription, you get the updates and support you need!

Our philosophy of software development is to steadily enhance and support our products in an effort to meet the needs of our customers without requiring them to totally re-train on new systems. This maximizes your productivity by reducing training overhead and reduces your cost of purchasing software every few years.

While this continues to be a cost-effective solution for most of our library customers, this does not mean that these updates are without cost to CROSS or that we can make new developments without cost. Software design and development continues to be expensive. Yet, we are committed to providing a good value at a reasonable cost. We are doing that through our CROSS Library Subscription which is a very economical solution for most of our customers.

We will be updating this topic as we release new updates. We recommend that you like our facebook page to receive notices as we announce updates there. Some of our posts here will be rather technical while others will be easily digestible. The benefit to you is that you will be aware of updates as they are released.

We hope this page will help keep you up-to-date with our latest CROSS Library developments.

2022-01-27 — January update improvements for CROSS Library Mint

We are happy to announce that CROSS Library Mint has all the latest VirtualBox support and recent Mint kernel updates pre-installed to make it easy to update your system in the shortest time possible! This update also resolves an issue with Search on some customer systems caused by WINE 7 which the Mint team automatically vetted for update starting January 2022. WINE 7 is currently not supported by CROSS Systems, Inc. due to the number of unresolved bugs it contains. We encourage the WINE team to continue the great work they are doing and improve WINE 7 until it is ready for prime time! Until then, we will be sure to test it until it is as good as 6.0.2 which we continue to support! Note: This January 2022 update of CROSS Library Mint provides WINE 6.0.2 and will not allow it to update to WINE 7 until CROSS has guaranteed the quality of that version branch. (Note: All CROSS Library Mint systems before 2021 have WINE 4.x which was slower than the MUCH IMPROVED WINE 6.x line which we ship in this update. Our CROSS Library Mint upgrades are tested and proven before we pass them along to our customers normally involving these types of choices on our part as a portion of what we do to serve you the best products and services possible!)

2021-11-20 — November update makes updates to CROSS Library Mint a SNAP!

We are happy to announce that CROSS Library has been made even more compatible with Linux Mint with kernel updates to improve a known-issue with CROSS Library Find where the Find button would not respond under specific conditions. 2021-06-12 — June update smooths launch and various scripts in CROSS Library Mint

We are happy to announce that CROSS Library has been made even more compatible with Linux Mint with updates to improve launching CROSS Library, disk backups, and shutdown. Scripts known to be affected: (backup to disk, shutdown, reopen CROSS Library)

2021-04-30 — May update fixes long-term problem with Comments, Keywords, Search, and Find windows in CROSS Library Mint…

We are happy to announce that CROSS Library Mint has been made even more compatible with Linux Mint with updates to improve focus handling for sub-windows in the CROSS Library app. (This is something we previously instructed customers to handle manually by dbl-clicking on the visible window to see if another window might be hiding behind the one displaying. While that may be a helpful technique to remember in a few cases, 90% of this issue can be prevented for improved reliability. That what this update does–prevents freeze-ups in CROSS Library.) We encourage ALL CUSTOMERS to install this update or any future update to ensure CROSS Library Mint works best for you!

2020-10-02 — October update smooths launch, ensures correct database drivers…

We are happy to announce that CROSS Library has been made even more compatible with Linux Mint with updates to improve launching via the ‘Desktop Books icon’. Our installer has also been improved to always update the database drivers automatically starting with this update. (This is something we previously handled manually and now can be handled automatically for reduced risk.) We encourage ALL CUSTOMERS to install this update or any future update to ensure the correct drivers are installed for use with CROSS Library.

2020-09-21 — Completion of change to OpenJDK 8

We are happy to announce that our OpenJDK project is complete. Things got complicated over here for this update. We had to tackle several changes at once including upgrading Java launchers we use for CROSS Library and our process of how we build and deploy CROSS Library. This update may bring some nice changes to your ‘little books icon’ (in the notification area / system tray). If you have not updated since before February, this update brings several important improves to the auto-update process making installing updates a breeze! It’s nearly automatic. Most customers who receive updates since February 2020 will automatically receive a prompt to install this update. If your CROSS Library version is not September 2020 or beyond, please call for assistance in installing this update manually.

2020-07-24 — Email format improvements!

We are very happy to say that our email system has been upgraded! That means that your renewal reminders, customer emails, and even invoices will be in an easier-to-read format! Also, the Subject of your email may be updated to related to the topic of the email such as CROSS Library making it easier to search and locate our emails of interest.

2020-03-17 — CROSS Library Update (Window only)

Our latest CROSS Library update includes:
We transitioned CROSS Library to use OpenJDK 8 to ensure free licensing for all of our 32-bit Windows-based clients (Windows XP through 10). These environments have passed our initial testing and demonstrate good stability at this time.

Note for CROSS Library Mint customers: All customers who had CROSS Library Mint installed after 11/26/2019 will automatically receive this update as soon as we release it for the CROSS Library Mint platform. (A few issues are currently being resolved to bring this update to a good stability on the Mint platform. These issues are in regard to fonts, and a few GUI display elements that do not yet display properly in OpenJDK as of this time. As of this update, Mint systems should remain on the previous update of 2020-02-20 for the time being.)

2020-02-20 — CROSS Library Update

Our latest CROSS Library update includes:
Improved compatibility support for Windows 7, Vista, and XP! We have been working this month on increasing our updated installer’s support for older systems for those who need it. CROSS Library runs great on XP Pro up through Windows 10 regardless of bitness–just get the right installer on our download page.

2020-01-24 — CROSS Library Update

Our latest CROSS Library update includes:

Improved CROSS Library launching (we fixed several conditions where CROSS Library would not not properly after an automatic update).

Improved data recovery for the following:
-during cloud (internet) backup/restore
-when opening a CROSS Library database, if you are prompted due to an error opening the database, clicking Retry will recover your latest data automatically! (This covers cases where power outage or other unexpected system shutdown, crashed, etc. have rendered the database unable to open. CROSS Library now can automatically repair the condition when you click Retry to get your latest data back and running.)

2019-10-05 — CROSS Library Mint Update

We have continued to update CROSS Library Mint, and all new installs will get this version.  We are adding a new “refurbish upgrade” option where you can mail in your existing laptop for $200 have us install CROSS Library Mint 64-bit onto it.  This allows you to extend the life of your existing system and get the most out of it while avoiding the problems with Windows Updates magically breaking your system whenever it happens to install updates!

2019-09-05 — CROSS Library Mint Update

We have continued to update CROSS Library Mint, and all new installs will get this version.  We are also selling new laptops with a 64-bit version of this CROSS Library Mint system installed directly onto the laptop–no Windows Updates to slow you down!

2019-08-05 — CROSS Library Mint Update

We are very happy to announce our latest CROSS Library Mint upgrade!  This update connects CROSS Library to our brand new 2019 CROSS Cloud System!  (Our older internet Backup and Restore cloud functions in ALL VERSIONS of CROSS Library ceased to function due to server-system Windows Updates causing database drivers or other system configuration to behave in detrimental ways 3 times earlier this year.  Out of concern for the thousands of customers who depend on our Cloud system, we increased our efforts to move off of Windows hosting to our new 2019 Cloud Hosting system and upgrade CROSS Library to utilize it.)  For more details on the hundreds of updates that have been included in this update to resolve dozens of known issues and provide upgraded data backup and maintenance for your databases, see crosslibrary.com/news

We are working on our internet backup / restore system, please be patient as we resolve the issues:  See this link for more details: Internet Backup System Status

2019-02-15 — CROSS Library Mint Improvements

A large number of improvements for CROSS Library Mint 64-bit support related to:

-Vastly increased out-of-the-box printer driver support.
-Resolved Java / Cinnamon interface conflict by switching to MATE interface
-Removed Default Desktop (used previously to resolve a Mint Cinnamon interface / Java conflict which is resolved in this update)
-Additional known issue work-around added for page-range printing (via use of ‘PDF printer’ and ‘Download PDF to host system for printing’ icon on Mint desktop).  See documentation in ‘CROSS Support’ folder on Mint desktop for details or call for a walk-through, if necessary.
-Improved performance in the following ways:
a) switched from Cinnamon to MATE interface (lighter by design)
b) reduced number of startup jobs configured in Mint
c) modified ‘Re-Open Library’ desktop icon to NOT RESTART MINT TOTALLY leading to faster reload during each session before making backups
d) increased regular cleanup actions to keep a tight ship and maintain good performance
e) disabled I/O APIC in default configuration to reduce CPU overheads not necessary for the VM configuration (due to general technology bloat so common today)
f) set default configuration to 1 CPU for Mint vs. 2 used previously to offset overheads due to item e above
g) increased default setting of RAM available to Mint (this reduces memory management load on mint leading to better performance by default on most systems)

2. Bug fixes for Internet Backup/Restore to reduce error prompts and just work better overall.
3. This update is the basis for our new web interface functions and provides support for Java 8 and later so that CROSS Library with function correctly with these Java versions when present on your systems.

DIRECT INSTALL + MINT UPDATES

This update is a wrap-up of series of bug fixes related to printing.  These bugs tended to cause ‘General Protection Faults’ to occur on some systems with some databases–not all systems or databases experience this condition, but if you occasionally have had trouble printing or opening your database after printing where this type of error came up, we have the issues resolved in this update.

This update fixes a bug reported by some customers in printing.  (CROSS has continued working with customers who have reported that CROSS Library crashed on their systems during or after viewing/printing reports, labels, label-sets, catalog cards, etc.)  If you experience this type of error AFTER installing the latest updates, please contact CROSS so we can help determine the specific cause of the issue on your system.

CROSS has updated our installers to remove Java is installed on your system.  This is a temporary fix pending our next update.  Also, this update includes a few files missing from earlier versions which can help backup functions and printing function as expected without reporting “another user is in the database” unless absolutely necessary.

CROSS has completed updating all standard reports which can cause CROSS Library to crash during or after viewing/printing reports, labels, label-sets, catalog cards, etc.  If you experience this type of error after installing the latest updates, please contact CROSS so we can help determine if you have a custom report that may be causing that issue.

2017-06-08 (Compatibility update)

CROSS is releasing a compatibility fix for latest update affecting customers using Windows XP and 2000

2017-06-06 (Bug Fix)

Bug Fix: At times last record add/edit not persisted fully to database before Backup.

1. CROSS has resolved issues which can cause CROSS Library to crash during or after viewing/printing reports, labels, label-sets, catalog cards, etc.   This update includes several compatibility updates for Windows 10 as well as several bug fixes including those noted below:

BUG FIX: When printing accession ranges, previous versions had a bug where search settings would silently filter out expected entries depending on circumstances.  We are unable to determine exactly which previous versions were affected at this time, but installing this update resolves the issue.

BUG FIX: Duplication Classification check error ‘Invalid Use of Null’ was terminating CROSS Library.  While working on this bug fix, we recommended a work-around–unchecking the option ‘File/Settings/Edit Settings/Check for Duplicate Classification’.  After installing the latest updates, you may re-select this option if you used this work-around.

1. CROSS has found and resolved a few additional issues which can cause CROSS Library to crash during or after viewing/printing reports, labels, label-sets, catalog cards, etc.   This stability update is a culmination of the resolutions begun with the 08-13 update as described below.

1. CROSS has reinstated backup reminders along with included recommendations and defaults (to backup or not at this point in time). These changes are to help our customers keep current backups when it is a good time to do it based on specific system conditions. We have taken a lot of time to research and resolve the issues that were occurring, and this update seems to be helping all of our customers who have downloaded it so far to keep their data safe and to provide much better experience in their use of CROSS Library.
2. We have added a check to provide an automatic database rebuild option when necessary for rebuilding a database when CROSS Library attempts to open the database and cannot (ie. it needs to be rebuilt).
3. We discovered and resolved a number of issues in reports causing CROSS Library to crash during or after viewing/printing reports, labels, label-sets, catalog cards, etc. These issues often caused Library databases to require a rebuild in order to continue using the software. Resolving the cause of these issues provides much better long-term stability, security of data, and overall ease-of-use. Note: If you continue to have problems with reports and you are using ‘replacement’ or ‘custom’ reports, we will need to review those for you on an individual basis to ensure any issues are resolved. In these cases, please call 1-877-615-9541 and leave us a voice-mail to this effect if you know this to be your situation, and we will check your account. If you have any continuing issues with reports crashing the software, do the same, and we will take a look at your account to see what we can do to resolve the issue.
4. We have added more sequencing options for reports–see the View/Print options when printing anything in CROSS Library for the new and expanded options.
5. Upgraded cloud servers to provide better stability and capacity for our cloud backups and web hosting.
6. Updated web hosting to support update notifications and renewal reminders.
7. To reduce waste of printing supplies, we removed the starting Accession # when printing an accession range (catalog cards, labels, label sets, etc.). We now display the default range as -500 (if your highest accession# is 500).
8. We have also added a verification prompt if you specify an Accession # range > 49 values. You may specify a different threshold, if desired. If you wish to only prompt when your ranges are 100 or larger, you may go to Help/About and add the following into the Command Line field: /WARNPRINTABOVE:99
9. This update has been well tested and includes a wrap-up of all prior updates released this year resolving bugs introduced accidentally in previous releases. If you have updated in 2016 and noticed any quirks or bugs, we HIGHLY RECOMMEND this update to resolve those.

2016 (2nd Quarter):

1. Library 1.7 bug fix for an error that would at times produce a General Protection Fault after closing a print preview window on some systems.
2. Library 1.7 updates to update old website links to the new locations on our new site, show the current information in the Help/About window.
3. Smaller bug fixes.
4. A significant update to all Backup, Restore, and Rebuild functions to prompt when Library needs to restart in order to correctly complete these operations rather than failing with a message that another user has the database open. This has caused a lot of trouble for our customers over a long period of time, and we are very glad to help resolve it. The issues were previously difficult. Now, CROSS Library provides helpful and correct advice in the new prompts to guide you through any necessary extra steps needed.
5. Added adjustments so that CROSS Library is closed without prompting when Windows is logging off or shutting down. This technique will be added to the tray icon also in the July planned update.

2016 (1st Quarter):

1. Windows 10 Laptop Systems Launch (provides more options for customers who wish to upgrade their hardware and have CROSS Library working out-of-the-box).
2. On-going hosting system updates to support our next set of software releases
3. Website updates:
-Addition of Windows 10 Laptop System Bundles
-Update of all older websites to bring all content forward to this one and update as necessary. ALL relevant information is now on this site. Please disregard any information found on our older sites as these will be removed soon.
-Fixed/repaired broken site links where possible to ensure that the latest content is available and correct

2015 Updates

1. Updated server systems to support future update releases
2. New server hosting system to support future update releases
3. Website upgrades to support web ordering and future update releases
4. Added support for Windows 10 32-bit editions after validation
5. Updated installers for improved compatibility

~2014

Included support for Windows 8.1

January, 2013…

Whew! The last couple of years have included a TON of updates to our installers.
Most of these changes were related to Windows compatibility issues.
We have updated our installers on our website from time to time along the way.
These are things that needed to be done to make our software work correctly.

We are working hard to roll out a new delivery which resolves another long list of issues.
This next BIG release will bring all of our development efforts together onto the same page so that we can release updates one at a time instead of in such a large, slow projects.

Portions of our 64-bit support, is hinging on that BIG release. We are dedicated to getting it right.
When it is done, we will post a summary of all of these projects in a post here.

MAY 11, 2009

This update is to fix installer issues: We recently had to rewrite our installer due to an issue where anti-virus companies began to target a Vista-compatibility tool we had been using. Now, we have eliminated that tool and are working to work the kinks out of the system.

We will announce this update when it’s ready for our existing customers to get via our automatic update system. We do not currently advise anyone to manually update unless you are currently having trouble using the CROSS Library software. If your existing install is not working, try our latest update. It fixes many things from install problems to internet backup problems.

(CURRENT STATUS: Due to recent installer problems (end of April through May 10th), we have been forced to drop back to our best recent release: 2009-04-16 Rev. B as of May 11th. We will have a redo of the latest updates once we have the wrinkles worked out on our development end of things here.) Downloading using our latest install/update link will get you our best recent release. 🙂

April 14, 2009

OK, the moment everyone has been waiting for! We have finalized a completely-rewritten version of CROSS Library for Windows Vista, XP, 2003, and Windows 2000.

As noted in the previous post in March, we have fixed and improved many issues in this version over the past few months. We had to make a very large number of changes to the internals of the system. However, you should notice little difference–except that it “just works.” The install process has changed, but there is little to say except that it’s easier, faster, and better overall.

A plethora of quality-improvement fixed have been made to the software. Many updates which were not announced earlier have been compiled into this release. The main functions of the software have remained the same. This version is mainly about quality control and secondarily about performance. This version is more stable than the previous with the basic functions working on all supported Windows versions at this time. We still have more changes to do in the area of ‘Download to FlashDrive’, and ‘Download to CD’. We will continue to work on those issues. For now, we advise that you have internet access in order to install this version. Once installed, you may disconnect–you do not need continuous internet access to use the software. Of course, functions such as Internet Backup, etc. will require internet as they always have.

Click here to go to our CROSS Library Download Page

We expect to spend some time resolving glitches that will pop up on some systems as always happens with such a large number of changes.
CROSS Systems, Inc. Support Team

March 24, 2009 (Vista-ONLY update)

A completely-rewritten version of CROSS Library is available for Windows Vista.
Due to a large amount of feedback from our customers, we have fixed and improved many issues in this version over the past few months.

A plethora of quality-improvement fixed have been made to the software. Many updates which were not announced earlier have been compiled into this release. The main functions of the software have remained the same. This version is mainly about quality control and secondarily about performance. This version is quite fresh, but the basic functions seem to be working fine on Windows Vista at this time. We still have more changes to do in the area of performance and in the area of customer-requested features. We will continue to work on those issues in the future.

Click here to go to our CROSS Library Download Page

>>> PLEASE NOTE: If you have Windows XP, Windows 2003, or Windows 2000, we recommend that you wait to update until we have this ready for you and get it announced on this thread. This will save you much time and stress. We will have it out shortly. Thank you!!

We will be releasing updates to this version, so you can expect most problem issues you find to be resolved over the next couple of weeks as we refine it and make it to be 2003, XP and 2000 ready.

We expect this version will improve our quality of service to you by improving the quality of our software. That’s what this update is all about.

Blessings!

An update has been released to fix an issue where the installer fails because no releases of Java version 6 are found on the target system.

This should fix the intermittent cases where the installer simply did nothing at times. After the customer installed Java from www.java.com, everything worked fine. This is no-longer required at installation time. The installer now automatically installs Java, if no release of Java version 6 is found.
CROSS Systems, Inc. Support Team

July 3

An update is released to:

1. help those who are downloading Library 1.7 to a FlashDrive.
2. help those who are using the Internet Restore function

The update shows the Volume Label and Drive letter as well as the Total Size and the Free Space of the drive.

Also, read-only drives will not be shown helping eliminate confusion when some devices (such as U3 Cruzers, Vonage FlashDrives, etc.) are inserted. These drives caused problems due to a read-only volume which was sometimes offered as a usable FlashDrive.

If your FlashDrive is no-longer detected when you attempt to use it, check that you have switched the write-protect setting on the drive to the off position.

A bug in the ‘Download Library 1.7 to FlashDrive’ function was fixed which was causing it to hang in some cases.

A bug in the Internet Restore function has been fixed so that it now functions normally when you select the Machine Name from which you wish to restore. (In the past, the system would not fill in the database to restore field when the user selected the Machine Name.

June 26

CROSS released a recommended update to fix a bug in Internet Backup where under a very specific condition, your database would not be placed back where it should be. Several conditions must have converged for this bug to show up, so you may or may not have had a problem with it.

Severity: Bothersome to see the database disappear, but fairly low–all customers who have called CROSS Systems, Inc. have recovered their database with their latest changes in-tact.
Occurrance: Fairly Rare

Summary: We highly recommend that you update now to receive this fix–to save you time that this bug could cost you.
CROSS Systems, Inc. Support Team

June 2008

June brought some other bug fixes which were not generally released as individual updates. CROSS Systems, Inc. has determined that most of these updates are not critical and that it would be better to wait for things to settle at the moment.

June 19 – The installer has been changed to be a single-file download.
This change was determined necessary by our customer-experience with the installer.

Most customers had no problems with the “download any updated files” system that we used previously, but we still had a smaller number of customers who had significant problems using the installer–this change is to serve them better. (Firewalls and some network security policies were causing the problems. This is a required response to real-world scenarios.)

NOTE #1: This change COULD make dial-up users update downloads LONGER!
WORKAROUND: If the customer can go anywhere where FAST internet is available, they can NOW (due to this change) download the file at this address: http://www.crosslibrary.com/pub/InstallOnline.exe to a FlashDrive using fast internet connection,
(For further details, see: http://naog.ws/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a )
then take the FlashDrive to their computer with slow internet, connect using the dial-up internet, and run that InstallOnline.exe file from the FlashDrive to complete the ONLINE install using the dial-up (which usually only takes a minute or two on dial-up to download the remaining latest core software updates).

NOTE #2: As our installers continue to shrink in size according to our planned upgrades, these issues will become less severe. However, we continue to make things as efficient as possible.

An update was released to fix an issue where download to FlashDrive or CD would not download the autorun.exe file correctly. The result was that the FlashDrive installer did not auto-launch when inserted into the target system.

The CROSS Systems, Inc. servers were taken down Friday afternoon, May 2nd, through Sunday, May 4th, for system-upgrade work. Operations resumed normally by Saturday afternoon.

April 23, 2008

An update was released to fix an issue where installing from a FlashDrive or CD was sometimes not able to find Java correctly if the Java versions did not match exactly. This has been corrected to locate the any usable installed versions or to install the included Java version, if a working version is not already present on the computer.

An update was released to fix one of the causes for a problem where Library 1.7 would hang due to the service not starting correctly.

An update was released to fix the ‘Download to FlashDrive’ and ‘Download to CD’ options.

Now, the installers created by these options should work properly.
(These options are usually used to download the software for installing Library 1.7 onto computers without internet.)

Note: There is still an issue in the FlashDrive/CD installer where it attempts to connect to CROSS Systems, Inc. servers during the install process. You may simply click the ‘Continue Offline’ to continue the install process. This will go onto the list of known issues to be resolved.

An update was released to fix a bug where Send Problem Report would sometimes hang after uploading the report.

An update was released to fix a bug where Library 1.7 could not open web pages (from the Help menu and Help/WebLinks) on some computers.

An update was released to provide an easy retry in the installer. This should solve the issue where the updater or installer simply does nothing. (The main cause for the installer to simply “do nothing” is that an older version of Java might be on the system. Technically, our installer should IGNORE J2SE 5 and all earlier versions of Java, but at times, our installer does not do that. (This was a known issue which has been resolved in any downloads July 29th, 2008 and later.) If you are installing but the installer simply exits and no icon appears showing the install progress, you may want to uninstall all previous Java or J2SE entries in Add or Remove Programs, go to http://www.java.com, Download Java from there, then run our installer again to complete the install process.)

April 18, 2008

An update is available to make Library 1.7 start by showing the record with the highest Accession# when opening the database file. Since this is generally the last record added in the database, this should allow most of our customers to easily verify that their latest additions are present in the database when opening it without needing further action.

Another update was released to change the way our auto-update gives you update notices. Now, instead of seeing the “checking for updates” message, the Helper icon will blink as it checks for updates. The icon will continue blinking if updates or system messages are available. If no updates or message are available, the icon will simply stop blinking after a few seconds. (This behaviour may change in the future to make it more quiet by not blinking the icon while checking for updates but rather only when attention is needed.)

Changed all scripts internally to be compiled to .exe files.

This eliminates unsightly Command Prompt windows which tend to confuse users to think that our software is DOS-based 🙄 which it NEVER WAS! (Ok, ok…that is a pet peave! 😯 ) For the record, CROSS Library was the first Windows-based library software on the market in 1994. All of the competition were still using DOS-based systems. Of course, most of our competition eventually became Windows-based or went out of business. We have continued to upgrade our software over the years as per customer suggestions, and we have a steady stream of upgrades planned for years to come. We’re in it for the long-haul. We have an aggressive set of updates planned for the coming year, and we hope to see these updates be a huge benefit to our existing customers who have maintained their CROSS Library Subscriptions. If your subscription has lapsed, we’d encourage you to renew as soon as possible to take advantage of our latest updates and online services.

CROSS Systems, Inc. officially announced its new Library 1.7 Helper system-tray icon!
This is an enhancement aimed directly at “ease-of-use” concerns that we have had. We hope you will find this icon useful as it helps you with the following:
1. to alert you about updates AS THEY ARE RELEASED at CROSS Systems, Inc.
2. to install and update Library 1.7 MUCH MORE EASILY
3. to allow you to submit problem reports easily!
4. many more features are scheduled to be added…

February 12, 2008

Added an auto-update function in the Library 1.7 Helper icon to prompt customers on their computer when Library 1.7 updates are released at CROSS. (This will also check for system messages at CROSS to indicate when CROSS servers will be down for maintenance or upgrades, and to notify our customers of changes in our operating hours, schedule changes, etc.)

Late November through January 16, 2008

January through March entailed an enormous amount of work relating to how the core of Library 1.7 functions. Some of those changes are summarized extremely briefly in this post.

Also, the Library 1.7 license control has been centralized and simplified rather than being handled in Library 1.7 due to a history of technical problems. (There will be on-going changes later in the year related to changes to simplify the core of all multi-user operations in Library 1.7.)

——
Library 1.7 now has a service that handles many internal functions in the background. This change will help us to better support our customers–especially our Multi-User customers.

HOWEVER, during this time, Microsoft dropped support in Vista for allowing services to interact with the desktop and the user. These changes forced us to rewrite large portions of our software to use TCP/IP sockets to communicate.

This caused a lot of extra effort and expense on our part and now you are required to UNBLOCK on any prompts that might appear during the installation of CROSS Library software. This is a requirement in order to allow the CROSS software to communicate between components on the local PC.

Library 1.7 was changed to NOT USE Java WebStart to link from Library 1.7 to our Java side of the system due to a history of problems with this style of linkage.

November 16, 2007

Changes to allow registry entries to be queued into C:\CROSSUPD\UPDATE_REG.BAT for manual processing by an Administrator later, if they cannot be added automatically.

October 9, 2007

Fixed report SORTING OPTIONS (much report sorting capability had been inadvertantly dropped during previous updates to L17).

Added in the capability to print STARTING at a specific Catalog Card position (to help reduce waste of CC stock). (NOTE: This feature does not work with Subject Catalog Cards due to technical issues in that particular report layout. When CROSS completes the conversion to the Java print engine, these limitations will be removed and the starting card number feature will be available for all card types.)

Added capability to Cancel out EVEN IF the rebuilder hangs due to another user being in the database (or if a file is locked)

NOTE: A known condition exists where at times some customers are prompted that another user is in their database (when they are the ONLY user in the database). This appears to be coming from the report engine’s use of the database.

WORKAROUND: When exiting Library 1.7, do not backup. Then, open Library 1.7 and the database. Then, exit Library 1.7 again WITHOUT using any report functions. This seems to work well for most users to date.

SOLUTION #1: CROSS has plans to replace the report engine in Library 1.7. When that project is completed, this problem will cease to occur.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION #2: Another project is in the works to change the Multi-User functions of Library 1.7. This might fix the problem. However, there are several technical questions that remain unanswered.

October 8, 2007

More Report Sorting options made available (which had been removed in updates done back in 2003 or 2004).

Changed TERMINATE APP selection to downgrade the selection to OFFLINE MODE.

August 29, 2007

All Java utilities used by CROSS were adjusted to download and install on the local hard drive during the install process rather then ad-hoc updating for changes as detected by Java WebStart.

They are now launched locally rather than by using Web Start through the internet. (This change also helped to reduce the complexity of handling different install modes here at CROSS–OFFLINE vs. ONLINE installs.)
