Network admins, please follow the following steps when needing to install OR upgrade Oracle VirtualBox for use with CROSS Library. This document presumes you are installing onto Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit).
- First, Download and Save the installer files for VirtualBox 7 (recommended):
Microsoft VC++ 2019 Redis (required for VBox 7.x installs)
Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack 7.x (Apr. 5th, 2024)
Oracle VirtualBox Installer 7.x (Apr. 5th, 2024) - IMPORTANT: Please verify Windows Update is up-to-date (at least to Windows 10 22H2). Oracle VirtualBox installer tends to have bugs preventing correct installation on versions of Windows 10 prior to 22H2, so this is very important in order to save you time and repeated support incidents!
- Installing the latest monthly cumulative updates and suggested version upgrades is ideal, if possible.
- IMPORTANT: Install the first download above (Microsoft VC++ 2019 Redis) and RESTART, if recommended. (You may need to provide credentials required for software installation)
- Then, open the Oracle VirtualBox Installer downloaded above (AS ADMINISTRATOR) and provide credentials required for software installation.
- Click Next on the install wizard
- Click Next to use the default install options
- Please DESELECT these options to reduce desktop clutter:
-Create a shortcut on the desktop
-Create a shortcut in the quick launch bar - Click Next
- Click INSTALL to begin the process
- NOTE: You may need to grant administrative permissions both at the start of the installer AND after clicking INSTALL due to the design of the VirtualBox installers.
- At the end of installation, click FINISH with the default selected option to allow VirtualBox to open the VirtualBox Manager after installation (with required elevated permissions).
- IMPORTANT! Click File/Check for Updates to download the latest VirtualBox and Extensions Pack and select Upgrade.
- IMPORTANT! If prompted, be sure to click the DOWNLOAD button TWICE to update the Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack! Then, click INSTALL, then Upgrade, then scroll to the bottom of the terms window and click the
- ‘I Agree’ button and grant permission for Windows to install.
- You may wish to click OK and Delete to remove the upgrade file.
- In order to not prompt your librarian concerning VirtualBox updates, we recommend to DISABLE ‘Check for Updates’ found in Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager under ‘File/Preferences/Update/Check for Updates’
- If the extensions pack did not install in step #13 and #14 above, you may manually click File/Preferences/Extension Pack/Add and select the ‘Oracle VirtualBox Extension Pack‘ download. (The agreement requires you to scroll down and click ‘Accept’ at the bottom.
- Ensure that you have RESTARTED the system to allow the VirtualBox drivers to be fully updated before calling CROSS Systems, Inc. for further installation assistance of CROSS Library. (This restart reduces issues with USB printing, network, and display drivers.)
